Eleanor Mariah McNutt was born to Eugene H. McNutt and Anna Archbald. Eleanor's mother died when Eleanor was six years old. She had a sister, Josephine I. McNutt, born in 1882 and died in 1883.
Eleanor was raised by her grandmother, Mercy Mariah (Hoxie McNutt) Whitney. Eleanor's mother and sister are buried in the Henry Whitney plot in the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, New York. Her father's fate is unknown. He appears in the Whitney household in Green Island, Albany, NY in the 1870 US Census. He is head of household in the 1880 US Census in Albany, Albany, NY census, married to Annie and with daughter 'Nellie' age 2. Eugene's occupation is a Baker. Annie's birthplace is listed as Ireland, her father's birthplace as Ireland, and her mother's birthplace as England.

After her step-grandfather, Henry Whitney, died, Mercy Mariah and her daughters moved to Enfield, Connecticut, presumably to work in the Bigelow or other factory. That is where Eleanor met James Tilden and they married.
