Delois Sarah McCray House, who was affectionately known by her husband, friends, and family as "Lois", was born on August 31, 1925 to Johnny McCray and Ivory Jesse McCray in Blythe, California. She had four brothers and three sisters. Six of her siblings, along with her parents preceded her in death. Her surviving brother is Donald Lee McCray of Wichita, Kansas.
She was raised in the Dover community on her parents' farm with her siblings.
Delois accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age in Dover, Oklahoma and became a member of the local A.M.E. church.
After moving to Oklahoma City, she became a member of Avery Chapel A.M.E. Church where she faithfully served as a member of the choir and several other positions for more than sixty years. She was active in several community organizations, social, as well as political.
Delois Sarah McCray married Lincoln Dempsey House, her child¬hood sweetheart, in 1943. They were married sixty-four years before Lincoln's death in 2008.
She attended Booker T. Washington High School through the eleventh grade and later earned her GED (General Equivalency Di-ploma). She then continued her education and earned her LVN (Licensed Vocational Nursing) license. Later, she earned 12 additional college credits and was certified to teach Nurse's Aide students.
For many years she worked as a nurse for several hospitals through¬out the Oklahoma City area before accepting a position in Guthrie, Oklahoma with the Job Corp as a teacher. She later worked as a volunteer Teacher's Assistant at Edwards Elementary School. She retired after more than forty-five years of working.
Delois was a caring person and was happiest when she helped others. She was known for her laughter and her ability to make others laugh.
Delois leaves to cherish her memory, four daughters: Sherry Mosley (Charles R.) of Sacramento, CA, Carolyn House of Oklahoma City, OK, Verna House and Felicia House, both of San Diego, CA ; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of family and friends.
