John Payson and Louisa Rice are Edward's parents. He was a Chief Mate on the[ "Cedar Croft" out of Baltimore which arrived at Waterford March 15th (1881) experienced a hurricane from W., with terrific seas on Fubuary 26th, lat.40-lon 44 50. The hurricane washed overboard eight men of the port watch, five of whom were washed back. Chief Mate Edward Payson of Westport,NS.and the two men at the wheel were drowned: The hatchhouse as well as the binnacle was washed away, wheel cabin doors and skylight broken to pieces filling cabin with water; there were only six men fit for duty for the remainder of the passage, lost fore lower Topsailand split foresail.]
