He was born Sept. 17, 1955, in Logan, son of the late Donald Arthur Newton. Don was retired from O'Bleness Memorial Hospital; he was a veteran of the United States Army and was formerly a Captain with the Nelsonville Fire Department and a Deputy with the Athens County Sheriff's Department. He was a past master of the Nelsonville Masonic Lodge and transferred to Mingo Lodge #171 F&AM in Logan, when it closed.
Don loved his motorcycles and was an avid genealogist having traced his own family back 17 generations.
He is survived by his children, Donald (Shawn) Newton, Jr. of Norwalk, Amie Newton Welch of McArthur and Matthew Newton of Canal Winchester; grandchildren, Bailey Newton, Ella Newton and Eric Welch; brother, Robert Newton of Chillicothe and sister, Elaine (Rick) Wyckoff of Zephyrhills, Fla.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville with Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit and the United States Army.
Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, 46 Fayette St., Nelsonville where a Masonic service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m.
