Sarah “Julia” Armstrong Cummings, 95, departed this earthly life on September 10, 2016. The oldest of three daughters, she was born on November 26, 1920, in Shellman, Georgia to John Arthur and Minnie Mae (Hawk) Armstrong.

Julia’s lifelong love of children led her to major in Elementary Education at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. She taught in Georgia schools prior to moving to Columbus in 1947.

In the early 1960’s, Julia became a founding member of the Youth Service Guild, a Central Ohio organization that provided aid to struggling children, such as scholarships, a group home and other tools needed for success in school.

Julia was an associate of F&R Lazarus, with 28 years of service, in several sales and supervisory roles. She was a member of St. Philip Episcopal Church since 1959.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Minnie Armstrongher; loving husband, Joseph W. Cummings Jr; a daughter, Dr. Yvonne E. Cummings; and two sisters, Naomi Irene Blount and Johnnie Ruth Paige.

She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Herndon R. (Andrea) Cummings; a daughter, Rosalind Cummings (Charles) Wilson; son-in-law, Robert R. Colbert; nine grandchildren, Theodore Cummings, Tamara Craver, Rebecca Cummings Scales, Joseph Wilson, Lauren Cummings, Rhonda Colbert, Nancy Baez, Robin Blaylock and Roderick Colbert; seven great grandchildren, four devoted nieces, many cousins, other relatives and close family friends.
