Keith Urbach
September 25, 1943 - January 20, 2012
Madras resident William Keith Urbach passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2012, at Oregon Health Science University Hospital in Portland due to complications from a stroke. His wife and children were at his side. He was 68 years old.
Keith was born on Sept. 25, 1943, in Purdin, Mo., to Gene and Theo (Bagley) Urbach. He was the youngest of five children.
Keith was 5 years old when his family moved to Culver. He attended Culver schools and graduated in 1961.
In 1962, Keith met the love of his life, Lynda Critchlow while she was staying with relatives in Culver. They were married on Aug. 3, 1963. They were blessed with three children: Kevin, Mark and Angie.
Keith and Lynda made their home in Culver for most of their marriage. They lived briefly in Tucson, Ariz., and Yachats, Ore. After the children graduated from high school, they moved to Madras. They lived in Sacramento from 1991-2003.
Keith held many jobs throughout his life including: worker in the potato fields, school bus driver, custodian, ditch-rider and heavy equipment operator for North Unit Irrigation District, painter, maintenance worker for the city of Culver, custodian, long-haul truck driver, and truck dispatcher.
In 2004, Keith and Lynda opened So Spoiled Salon and Spa. After selling it, they later owned Twinkle Toes.
Keith was proud to be a volunteer firefighter for the Culver Fire Department for 25 years. He served as fire chief for 10 years. Keith received the Central Oregon Firemen's Association's Fireman of the Year Award. He was also a member of Culver Christian Church.
Keith could fix almost anything and remodeled at least four houses. He had many interests and loved to fish, hunt, hike, camp, play pinochle, work on cars, garden with his wife and kids, cook and bake. He and Lynda especially loved driving around Central Oregon to see new scenery and observe wildlife. Keith was known for his kindness and appreciation of his beloved pets and of all wildlife.
His biggest love was his family. Family always came first to Keith. He was a "hands-on" dad who was always available to help with homework. He could always be seen in the stands during his children's and grandchildren's sporting and school events.
He was awarded the FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer Award in 1982 for his tireless support of not only his own children but also the other FFA members. He was also a 4-H leader.
Keith will be remembered by those of us who loved him as being a kind, quiet soul with a keen sense of humor, but above all as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lynda Urbach of Madras; their children and spouses, Kevin and Lori Urbach of Culver, Mark Urbach of West Linn, and Angie and Scott Murrill of Wilsonville; his sisters and brother-in-law, Berniece Huntley of Madras, Reta and Jarvis Herrin of Spring Hill, Fla., and Barbara Lewis of Culver; his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Janice Critchlow, and Lois and Bob Conger; eight grandchildren: Alysha and Steven Urbach (Kevin's children), Vanessa, Jake and Kyle Urbach (Mark's children), and Nick George, Olivia George and Jack Murrill (Angie's children); one great-grandchild Brycen Urbach (Jake's son); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gene and Theo Urbach, brother Ellis Urbach, mother-in-law Nadine Critchlow and father-in-law Roger Critchlow, whom he considered his parents as well.
A memorial service will be held at Culver Christian Church on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m., with coffee and cookies to follow.
Since Keith so delighted in his cats and dogs, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Madras Humane Society, P.O. Box 274, Madras, OR 97741.
