Platte Bayles

1926 - 2016

Platte Durham Bayles age 90, of Toquerville, UT; lately of Delta, Utah, passed away September 14, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah.


The son of Hanson Durham Bayles and Caroline Lyman Bayles, Platte was born March 13, 1926 in Provo Utah. Raised in Blanding Utah and attended school there. He grew up on the family ranches in San Juan County, Utah and Mancos Colorado.


Enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of 17, where he served as a cook aboard the USS Talladega until the end of the war. He was offshore during the rising of the US flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima.


Married Alice Marilyn Wilkinson on August 20, 1946 in Elko, Nevada. They were later sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on May 30, 1963. They were blessed with 6 daughters: Gayle, April (Ronnie) Ruesch, Debra Lebbon, Carolyn (David) Pehrson, Tina (Mike) Pech, Mary (Mike) Lutio, and 3 sons Stephen (Sandra), Gordon (Debbie), and Brett. They were also blessed with 42 grandchildren, 117 great-grandchildren and 9 great, great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


Platte worked as a grocer, coal miner, and truck driver, retiring at the age of 73 as a truck driver. He lived in Utah, California, Arizona, and Colorado. He was living with his daughter Carrie in Delta, Utah at the time of his passing.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, daughters Gayle and Debbie, his parents Hanson and Caroline, 4 sisters, Carol, Margaret, Mildred and Marian; 3 brothers, Hanson, Francis and Reed; grandson Michael, and 2 great-granddaughters.


Services will be held Monday, September 19, 2016 at the LDS Stake Center in Blanding Utah. Viewing at 10:00 a.m , service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Blanding City Cemetery.


Platte's family would like to thank all of the wonderful staff at the Salt Lake City Veteran's Hospital that made his last days so much easier both for him and for his family. They are truly special people.
