Helen "Jerri" Geraldine Hansen

On Sunday, September 11, 2016, heaven gained a special angel. On that day, Helen Geraldine Hansen ("Jerri"), loving wife and mother, passed away at the age of 90. Her husband of almost 70 years, B.A. Hansen, was by her side, as well as her five daughters, Donna, Sharon, Melinda, Melissa, and Kim.
To Jerri, her family was her most important treasure. She is survived by her husband, five daughters, ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren, all of whom will miss her deeply. To some of the grandkids, she is known as "Chicken Grandma" because she used to raise chickens at her ranch home.
Jerri met B.A. at Luke Army/Air Force Base in Arizona in 1945 where she was working as a clerk typist ordering parts for aircraft, and B.A. was a Second Lt. in the Air Force. That day, she told her mom "I just met the man I am going to marry". They married in 1946 in Litchfield Park, Arizona. She and B.A. would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary later this month.
Being a military wife, Jerri became used to living a nomadic life. Shortly after she and B.A. married, they moved to Long Beach, CA. In 1949, they joyfully celebrated the birth of their first daughter, Donna, during their two year stay in Long Beach. When Donna was six months old, Jerri followed B.A. to Germany where he was stationed (a ten day journey by boat). In 1950, their second daughter, Sharon, was born during this stay in Germany. They moved to Apple Valley, CA in 1951 for a two year stay while B.A. was stationed at George Air Force Base. Another move to Virginia, another move to Illinois, and, in 1955, another move to Clovis, New Mexico where they were again blessed with the birth of not one, but two daughters, Melinda and Melissa. B.A. was called to Germany again and off they went with their four daughters in tow. After 18 months, they found themselves back in California, this time in Sacramento, where their fifth daughter, Kim, was born in 1958. One more move to Atwater, California where B.A. was stationed at Castle Air Force Base. Jerri vowed that she was never moving again, and they stayed put for the next 17 years, allowing their daughters to establish some roots. Jerri held down the fort in Atwater during B.A.'s various tours of duty. In 1977, B.A. and Jerri built a home in rural Winton where they have lived ever since.
Jerri had a loving heart and never hesitated to share that love and comfort with everyone she knew and some she did not know. She volunteered her time and energy to help others, and actively participated in the Lioness Club, where she served as president, treasurer, and chairman on separate occasions. She jumped in enthusiastically when asked to help with charitable causes, fundraising, serving meals, and whatever else was needed. In 2002, Jerri was honored as Winton Woman of the Year.
She loved the Lord with all her heart and took comfort in reading the Bible. She loved to fish and would not shy away from getting up early when the fish would be biting. She loved baseball. She enjoyed gardening, reading, painting, crocheting, and especially cooking. One of the ways she shared her love was through her cooking. Even as she got older and there were daughters and grandchildren to cook for family gatherings, she was always in the kitchen wanting to perform her magic.
