She was born on Aug. 23, 1906 to the Rev. Andrew and Mary Kile Smith in Birmingham, Iowa. She was baptized by her father and attended school in Birmingham and Eldon. She graduated from Weslyan College in Mt. Pleasant. She taught school in Cornell and was married bv her father to Herman Bertness on June 1. 1929 in Sioux Rapids. They had two sons Merlin and Kenneth. They resided in Lee Township near Sioux Rapids retiring on the family farm and later moved into Sioux Rapids in the fall of 1977. She was a member of the First United Church in Sioux Rapids, taught Sunday school, held offices in the Women's Fellowship and was a member of Chapter GJ Peo. She became a resident of Methodist Manor of Storm Lake in November of 1984.

She was preceded in death by two sisters Ena and Miriam Messenger; three brothers Howard, Herman and Wilfred; her parents and her husband.

Survivors include two sons Merlin and his wife Genny of Linn Grove; Kenneth and his wife Carolyn of Sioux Rapids; one brother Walden Smith of Manchester; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson and a host of other relatives and friends.
