Bennie was born in rural Iowa City on June 1, 1926 the son of Lloyd F. and Margaret (Vikel) Abbott. He was raised in Iowa City and attended City High School. Following high school, Bennie enlisted in The United States Navy. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945, Bennie worked construction for various companies in the Iowa City area until later starting his own plumbing business which he owned and operated for over 23 years. Bennie semi-retired in 1983 and went to work at O’Reilly Auto Parts as a delivery driver until retiring in 2012 at the age of 86. In his free time, Bennie enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his daughter Anita (Danny) Grell of Iowa City, two brothers Val and Ralph Abbott, and a sister Joann Dahnke. Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his son Jeffrey.
