Italian Politician and Banker. He was the 49th Prime Minister of Italy from 28 April 1993 to 10 May 1994 and was the tenth President of the Italian Republic from 18 May 1999 to 15 May 2006. He was also Governor of the Bank of Italy from 1979 to 1993, and Director General of the Bank of Italy from 1978 to 1979. Born in Livorno, he received a doctorate in ancient Greek literature and classical philology in 1941 from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. In 1943, after the date of the armistice with the Allies, he joined the Action Party, which he left in 1947. In 1946 he married Franca Pilla and he obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Pisa. In 2006, he was appointed as a lifetime senator following the end of his presidency. Ciampi died in a clinic in Rome.
