SWEETWATER - Opal Irene Simmons, age 82, of Nolan, Texas died Monday, December 11, 2006 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater, Texas.

Funeral services with Reverend Richard Petree officiating will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 401 East Third Street, Sweetwater, Texas. Burial will be in the Slater's Chapel Cemetery in Nolan, Texas.

Opal was born on October 6, 1924 in Sweetwater, Texas. She married Elbert Simmons on March 14, 1944 in Sweetwater, Texas. She was a member of the Nolan United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Newman High School in 1942; she was a past member of Mamie D. Crane No. 1018 in the Sweetwater Order of the Eastern Star, she received Homemaker of the Year from the Soil and Water Conservation; she was active in 4H for several years; she was a homemaker and was a lifelong resident of Nolan County and has lived in the Nolan community since 1942.

Opal is survived by: her husband, Elbert Simmons of Nolan, Texas; two daughters, Sue Rowlett and husband Bob of Nolan, Texas and Gay Simmons of Lubbock, Texas; a son, Stanley Simmons and wife Gail of Nolan, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary Ussery of Nolan, Texas; a grandson, Brett Rowlett and wife Cindy of Akron, Ohio; two granddaughters, Amy Taylor and husband Kyle of Nolan and Amanda Chance and husband Alan of Crowley, Texas; six great grandsons; niece, Rebecca Gunn and husband Glen of Nolan, Texas; nephew, Johnny Ussery, Jr., and wife Janyth of Nolan, Texas.

She was preceded in death by: grandson, Slater Lee Simmons, on January 5, 2006; great grandson, Aiden Kai Taylor, on April 14, 2006; and her brother, Johnny Ussery, in 1989.
