Tommy Garner

July 31, 1927 - August 23, 2016

Salem - Tommy Jean passed away peacefully on August 23rd. She was born in Francedis, Texas to Thomas & Minnie Armstrong. She graduated from Angleton High school and went on to study at the University of Texas where she met her husband to be, Ed Garner, in an accounting class. They fell in love and married in 1947. Their marriage lasted for 68 years. Ed passed away in August 2015. She is survived by daughter Carole & son Robert.

After their marriage, Ed started a career with Shell Oil Co. in Houston. Ed's job took the family to many different places in the United States and also to Holland for 2 years. Tommy was constantly packing up and unpacking as they moved around the country. She was the anchor for the family, taking care of the children and entertaining for Ed's job.

In retirement, they settled in Texas and Tommy enjoyed getting involved with the community - the Woodville Dogwood Festival, bridge clubs and other local groups. They loved to travel and go on cruises. Tommy and Ed moved to Oregon in August 2008 to be close to their daughter Carole.

Tommy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by: Daughter Carole (Al McCann) Keizer, OR; grandchildren Jennifer Henkel (Dave), Holly Payne (Darryl); and great-grandchildren Evan and Trevor Henkel, Tyler, Kayla and Daphne Payne. Son: Robert Garner (Mary) Los Altos Hills, CA; grandchildren Matthew Garner, Melinda Kraft (John), Mary Catherine and Mark Garner; great-grandchildren John III and Robert Kraft.

Services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home, 134 Missouri Ave S, Salem, on Friday, Sept. 2 at 12:30 pm. Celebration will follow at the home of Al & Carole McCann.
