Obituary of Mrs. Nancy Gray

At five minutes past 12 o'clock noon, on Saturday, January 19, 1907 death claimed Mrs. Nancy Gray, of North 5th St., being at the time of her death 81 years, nine months and 29 days of age.

Nancy Morgan, daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Morgan, was born in Kentucky on March 20, 1825. She was married to Sebastian Buher in that state about 1845. Shortly after their marriage they came to Iowa and settled on a farm in about a mile north east of Pekay. To them were born five children, two sons and three daughters, the following order: Richard Buher, of near North English, Iowa County; Letha, wife of William Allison, of this place, John Buher, of these Des Moines township, Mahaska County; Elizabeth wife of C. Tatman, of Eddyville and Mrs. Mary Cranson, of Poweshiek County. In the year 1858 Mr. Buher was instantly killed in a boiler explosion which occurred in the Gish grist mill at this place.

The subject of this sketch was United in marriage to Louis Gray Senior about 1862 and to them were born two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Williams, who died here about seven years ago, and Nally, who died in infancy. Mr. Gray died in January 1869.

Mrs. Gray was one of a family of nine children: Mrs. Rebecca Vance, who died at this place January 9, 1907; Mrs. Susan McCaskey, who died years ago; Mrs. Mary Cummins of the Cedar district; Mrs. Dorcas Thompson of Albion; Amanda, wife of Amos Gray, of this place; Mrs. Elizabeth Roth who died in 1868; Richard Morgan, of Boone; and Alexander Morgan, who died at Boone on January 17, 1907. Mrs. Gray's death was the third to occur in the family in less than two weeks.

She became a member of the Christian church when but 14 years of age, and had been an exemplary Christian since. For over 60 years past she has been a resident of this locality, most of that time having been passed upon the old homestead near Pekay. For a number of years past she has resided with her children here. Of late her daughter, Mrs. C. Tatman, has made her home with her mother. Many friends regret the death of this aged settler, and extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives and their threefold grief.

The funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by the pastor, elder BW Pettit, at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot in Highland Cemetery.
