Rev John Schmelzer
Visitation for the Rev. John Steven Schmelzer, 51, will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South. Funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Rev. Schmelzer, who was born in Waterville, Maine, died August 29. He was a nine-year resident of Spokane.
He received a bachelor's degree at Concordia Lutheran College in 1972, and attended Concordia Lutheran Seminary. He was a 1977 graduate of Garrett-Northwestern and received a master of divinity degree.
The Rev. Schmelzer served at several area United Methodist Churches. He served in Nightwalk Ministries in Spokane, on numerous Walks to Emmaus, and was Cropwalk chairman in Spokane for three years.
Survivors include his wife, Debra; a stepson, Corey Johnson of Rapid City, S.D.; three stepdaughters, Lindsey and Kjersti Johnson, both of Spokane and Caitlin Johnson of Rapid City; his mother, Norma Schmelzer of Clinton Township, Mich.; a sister, Anna Hickner of Poulsbo, WA.; and two brothers, Steve Schmelzer of Clinton Township and Jim Schmelzer of Macomb, Mich.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
