John served as a 1st Lieutenant, 7th Material Squadron, 5th Air Base Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Hartford County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 3, 1941, prior to the war, in Hartford, Connecticut. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Draftsmen and also as Single, without dependents.

John became a POW of the Japanese Army during the "Fall Of the Philippines" in 1942.

John "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army in the sinking of the Enoura Maru, along with 270 other POW's. The ship was sunk by U.S. Navy planes from the U.S.S. Hornet in Takao Harbor during the war. The U.S. Navy was unaware that POW's were on the ship.

On January 11th, two days after the bombing, the surviving POW's carried the dead from the holds. The bodies were buried in a mass grave on Formosa. After the war, the remains they found were reburied at the Punchbowl in Hawaii.

However there was no identification made on the remains so it is unclear whose remains were buried and whose remains were still missing.

John was awarded the Prisoner Of War Medal and the Purple Heart.
