Charles "Possum" McKinley Brittain, Sr., 88, of Mountain Grove Rd., Hickory, died Dec.11, 2005 at Brian Center-Viewmont after a period of declining health of two years.

Born Nov. 3, 1917, in Burke Co., he was a son of Monroe and Ella Brittain. A member of Calvary Baptist Church, he retired from Southern Desk Co. as a sander.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Mae Shuford Brittain, who died Nov. 30, 1995; two sons-in-law, Grady D. Potts, Sr. and Charles W. Farr, six brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Linda Bevins and husband Paul, with whom he made his home, Betty Jean Potts of Hickory and Revonda Greenway and husband, Elbert, of Hildebran; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles McKinley Brittain, Jr. and wife, Catherine, of Hickory; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Yvonne Hildebran of Icard.

The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Bert Dixon and C. Jason Farr at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will be at Hickory Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight, Monday.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Third Ave., SW, Hickory, NC 28601. Hickory Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
