Andre Lemoinde Lewis was born on March 30, 1947 in Columbus, Ohio to the late Virgil L. and Cegurna Lewis. He graduated from Linden McKinley High School in 1966. He was very active in sports and student administration. Andre joined the U.S. Army in 1966. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division’s Military Police Brigade in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina three years. After being honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant; he became an active member of the U.S. Army Reserves at Fort Meade, Maryland serving as a military Police Instructor. In 1970, he accomplished his goal to become a member of the Metropolitan Police Department in the District of Columbia, and a Master Patrol officer. Andre chose a union career path while in the department; serving as Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Shop Steward, 4th District Chief Shop Stewart, FOP representative to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, and elected Vice Chairman and Chairman of the FOP Metropolitan Police Department Labor Committee. In 1994, after retiring from the department, he worked at the U.S. Department of Justice as a security officer. Andre joined Bethany Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohio, where he accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. He joined Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland, when he married Joanne Neely-Lewis in January, 2001. He was active in church and was a member of the Senior Choir and the Consoling Choir. He enjoyed many years of fellowship with family and friends alike. Andre is a beloved father; grandfather, brother, cousin and friend. He leaves to celebrate his memory, his daughter Antoinette of Silver Spring, Maryland, his son Anthony (Veronica) Guyther of Laurel, Maryland, his step-daughters Monique Livingston (Arthur), NKenge Stocks (Mark), Dawn Harvey-Fletcher (Darryl); brothers Virgil (Paula) Alexandria, Virginia, and Byron Lewis of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Tre, Michael, Joey, Cameron, Caiden, Breana, and; his caregiver Patricia Lewis; as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Joanne and his sister Cegurna Thomas. Family will receive friends on Monday, September 19, at Mount Ennon Baptist Church, 9832 Piscataway Road, Clinton, Maryland from 10 a.m., until time of funeral at 11 a.m. Internment Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland. Flowers or expressions of kindness may be delivered to the church between 8 and 9:30 a.m. or in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Andre’s name to the cancer organization of your choice.
