The Lexington, in the Battle Of The Coral Sea, was first hit by two torpedos from Japanese torpedo bombers on the port side, then by two bombs from Japanese D3As bombers which disabled the ship.
After the ship had been abandoned it was later scuttled by five torpedos from the U.S.S. Phelps (DD-360).
Howard was declared "Missing In Action" in this battle.
He was awarded the "Bronze Star" and the Purple Heart.
