Ralph F. Wells, M.D. entered into rest on August 10, 2016. Predeceased by father Rev. G. Ronald Wells, mother Grethel Nichols Wells, wife Barbara Cumming Wells and son John Ronald Wells. He is survived by loving wife Ruth, Brother Keith, sister-in -law Sharon, their family and the rest of the human race.

The Wells family resided in Illinois, where Ralph was born. The family moved to Minnesota where as a senior in High school, he won an Honorable Mention in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search and graduated as valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Hamline University with honors and attended the University of Minnesota School of Medicine where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree.

After a rotating internship he completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Gastroenterology at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He later received a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Parasitology from the Louisiana State School of Medicine.

Dr. Wells served as chief Gastroenterology at William Beaumont Hospital, Ft. Bliss, Texas. Vietnam assignments included Commanding Officer 61st Medical Battalion; Commanding Officer 17th Field Hospital; Headquarters Area Command Surgeon, Saigon (during the Tet Offensive 1968); Chief of Professional Services 3rd Field Hospital and as Consultant in Internal Medicine, USARV, Long Binh.

His last assignment was a chief of Gastroenterology at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, where he was involved in Operation Homecoming supervising the medical evaluation of repatriated Army Prisoners of War from Vietnam 1973-1976.

Dr. Wells was involved in the care of President Lyndon B. Johnson along with the cardiologists Col. Robert L. North and Col. George McGranahan, 1966 to 1973. During the Tet Offensive he attended President Thieu of Vietnam, 1968.

Dr. Wells retired in 1976. Military awards included Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Metal, National Defense Service Medal

Following retirement from the Army, Dr. Wells joined San Antonio Medical Associates at the Nix building where he practiced for thirty-two years.

Dr. Wells was a member of numerous medical organizations: life member of Bexar County Medical Society; Texas Medical Assoc.; American Medical Assoc.; Fellow, American College of Physicians; Fellow, American College of Gastroenterology; American Gastroenterological Assoc.; American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy; founding member of Texas Society Gastroenterology and Endoscopy (pass President and recipient of Patterson-Nelson award) and the William Beaumont Society.

He was a clinical professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio 1972-1986. Dr. Wells authored or contributed to over 50 scientific papers and chapters of several books.

Dr. Wells was a member of the King William Association from 1978 until the time of his death. He was a member San Antonio-Bexar Kiwanis Club and a participant of the reading program, Reading is Fundamental (RIF) at the Bonham Academy, San Antonio for several years.

Dr. Wells served on the Board of the Alamo College Foundation for a number of years. In 1983 he established the King William Association Scholarship for Brackenridge High School graduates to attend the Alamo College of their choice. Later with the help of Mr. Pat Legan, he established that Dr. Frank Bryant Nursing Scholarship at Saint Philips College and initiated the Dr. Frank Bryant Patient Simulation Laboratory at Saint Philips College.

Dr. Wells enjoyed walking, wood working and gardening. He was an avid cyclists and along with Dr. Elliot Weser and Neal Collins established the San Antonio Wheelmen.
