He was born on May 3, 1936 in Anderson to Marion and Vera (Johnson) Hurst and has lived in Alexandria all of his lifetime. Sherm was a graduate of Alexandria High School-Class of 1954. He served in the Indiana National Guard. He retired from Delco-Remy in 1991 after 29 years of employment. He was a member of the Alexandria Elks-#478 and the Alexandria Eagles-#1771. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. Sherm enjoyed distributing Thanksgiving dinners to needy families with the Elks. Time spent with his family was very important to him.

Services honoring Sherm's life and legacy will take place at 1 pm on Saturday in the Owens Funeral Home, 412 North Harrison Street with Michael W. Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria. Friends may call at the Owens Funeral Home on Friday from 4 pm to 8 pm.
