It is well documented that Susanna Steuart, daughter of well respected and prominent Dr. George H. Steuart, was the first wife of James Tilghman. There is no reason to believe that James would not have had his young wife and mother of his 3 very young children buried in the Tilghman family burial grounds on their Hermitage estate. Unfortunately, many headstones from the 1700's no longer exist or are unreadable to conclusively support this assumption. A survey of the burial grounds in 1900 did not include her name. Early burial records may have been destroyed when the main house burned in 1832.
