"I am devistated to report that my fiancee, Sherry Lynn Hustis-Basford, passed away very suddenly this morning, sometime between1:45 am and when I found her at 2:20 am. I'm sick with grief, and since I've run out of tears for the moment, I can see the keyboard to type this.
We had just returned home from the Hollywood Bowl, after watching the H B Orchestra and E L O in a spectacular concert, with a wonderful fireworks show. She said it was the very best music, lazer & fireworks show she ever saw! We were with our high school chum, Wayne Wall & his wife, Kate. She slept during most of 1 3/4 hour drive back to Bakersfield, waking up as we exited the freeway... saying "Where are we? ....I've got to use the bathroom. " I told her we'd by home in 8 minutes, would she be ok. She said "Thats fine." Normally, we both unload the vehicle of our stuff, but I told her to bale to get to the bathroom, and that I'd bring everything in, then move the cars around for the night. While I was doing that, Sherry said goodbye to our friends that do our 'house-sitting' and they met me on the walk, and I talked to them for a minute. Brought in a couple more loads and dropped them in the entry way, then moved the cars around. I then fed Tinkerbelle & the cats.
Walked down the hall to wash my hands in the bath, passing our bedroom, I noticed Sherry was sprawled on the bed. Nothing unusual for her to crash like that when she's tired. Washed my hands, picked up our 2 pillows and tossed them toward the headboard. "Hon, wake up we have to put the sheets on the bed" .....no answer. I went over to her side and prodded her... no response. I then got on the bed, and saw no breathing, no pulse. I called 911, the response gal told me to put her on the floor, and start 500 compressions or until the crews arrived. About 5 minutes later I heard the doorbell, I ran and let them in, I was told to stay in our living room. I called her mom, and told her the situation, about 2:30 am. I told her I would call her back. About 30 minutes later, a Bakersfield Hall Ambulance Paramedic came out to me and told me they did everything they could, but she had died. That is the absolute worst feeling I have ever felt, I was, and still are, sick.
The cute red head, with " that smile" I first met at Eagle Rock High School...way back in 1970, was gone. After all those years, we got back together, 3 1/2 years ago. Her 62nd birthday would have been in 3 days, Thursday, and she was excited to be spending a night on Catalina for her birthday!
I'll be in shock for quite sometime. Thanks for your thoughts & prayers toward her family & Sherry....my 'firecracker'. Things are pending.
Take care,
Larry"
