Richard J. Haworth, formerly of Columbia City, long time Extension agent for Whitley County, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 95 years young.

He was born in 1920 near Noblesville, Indiana to Julius and Agnes Haworth (Applegate). He graduated from Purdue University in 1942, with a B.S. in Agriculture and earned a Masters from Indiana University in 1966.

He served in WWII as a pilot in the Army Air Corps. After discharge, he began his career of 32 years as a Purdue Cooperative Extension agent in Whitley County, Steuben and Morgan Counties. He returned to Whitley County in 1965 until his retirement from extension work. He served six years as the Executive Vice President of the Columbia City Chamber of Commerce.

He was married in 1947 to Betty Vannice, a pretty girl he met at an Extension conference, and raised three kids. She preceded him in death in 1992. He wed Doris Doty in 1994 and traveled the world with her until her passing in 2000. In 2004, he married Norma Sheets and returned to farm living.

He was active in Rotary, Shrine Club and was a hospital volunteer for Parkview. He also belonged to the Columbia City Lodge #189 F. & A.M. He served on the Columbia City Tree Board and he was most proud of planting trees at Peabody library grounds. He also served on the Columbia City Housing Authority board, Blue River Senior Housing board, the Columbia City Economic Development Commission and the Peabody Library landscape committee. Columbia City Chamber of Commerce chose him Citizen of the Year in 1997 and he was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Frank O’Bannon for his years of volunteer service in 1999.

He is survived by his son, William Haworth of Indianapolis and daughter, Diane Haworth of Holland, MI, and stepdaughters Cheryl (Jerry) Geiger and Barbara (Steve) Crozier, former wife Norma Sheets and her children Susan (James) McQueen, Janet (Ronald) Hinbaugh, Michael (Jill) Sheets and Dennis (Diane) Sheets.

He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Haworth and brother, Warren Haworth.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The graveside service followed by burial will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Cicero Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with a Masonic service immediately following.
