Born August 5, 1932, the daughter of George and Mary (Veenker) Block, on a farm near Adrian, Minnesota. Less than two years later the family moved to a farm south of Little Rock, Iowa. She received her elementary education in a country school and graduated from Little Rock High School in 1950. She was very active in music and acting during her high school days. In 1952 she received her teaching certificate from Northwestern College, and taught in several country schools in Osceola County.

On March 31, 1955, Ruth was united in marriage to Eugene Ackerman, moving to Texas and then to Pennsylvania where he was stationed in the US Army. After living in several farm homes, they purchased and moved to a house in Little Rock in 1963. During these years Ruth helped with the chores as well as taught several years in country schools. Two years after their divorce in 1968, Ruth moved with her children to Orange City where she continued her education, graduating in 1972 from Northwestern College, with a Library Science and Education Degree. In 1996 she worked as a volunteer in the library at the Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, for four months.

There was never a dull moment in Ruth's life as she was always willing to share her talents with others. She did many programs sharing her testimony in song, telling her experiences in churches and schools and entertaining residents in nursing homes.
