Deanna Ideline Nelson, 78, of Hawarden, passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 at her residence.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2016 at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. Erma Wolf and Hospice Chaplain Mary Block officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Lands Lutheran Cemetery rural Hudson, South Dakota. Visitation with the family will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the American Lutheran Church. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family. Deanna Ideline Nelson was born March 3, 1938 in Canton, South Dakota, the daughter of Meredith and Edna Irene (Swanson) Gray. She graduated from the Canton High School in 1956. Deanna married Myron L. Nelson on October 4, 1957 in Canton. Her first job was with the Wilson Truck System in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She and Myron ran the Nelson Bakery in Hawarden, Iowa for 28 years. Deanna later worked at Coilcraft in Hawarden. Myron died on May 3, 1999.
Deanna was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden and also the MIC Club and the Book Club at the Hawarden Library. She enjoyed quilting, reading, gardening, and walking. Her faith, family, and friends were very important to her.
She is survived by her children, Sandra (Richard) Johnson of Hawarden, Glenn Nelson of Hawarden, Duane (Sandi) Nelson of Winterset, Iowa and Brenda (Chris Avery) Dekkers of Hawarden; 9 grandchildren, Cassandra Oberembt of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Kaitlyn Oberembt of Lexington, Kentucky, Colby Oberembt of Adel, Iowa, Michael Nelson of Boone, Iowa, Matthew (Mary) Nelson of Ames, Iowa, Ethan (Lauren) Dekkers of Keosauqua, Iowa, Jared (Alyssa) Dekkers of Hawarden, Carly Dekkers of Ames, Iowa, and Megan Dekkers of Hawarden; 3 great-grandchildren, Brecken Oberembt, Logan Adam, and Liam Dekkers; and her siblings, Laurel Gray of El Cajon, California, Priscilla (William) Pochardt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Arlyce Schut of Madison, South Dakota.
Deanna was preceded in death by her husband, Myron; an infant son Garry; her parents, Meredith and Edna Gray; and her in-laws, Andrew and Ella Nelson.
