Obituary for Priscilla "Pat" Rogers
Priscilla (Pat) Blackett Rogers died peacefully at her Middleburg, VA, home on February 29, 2016. She was 95. Pat was born in Chicago, IL, on January 21, 1921, to Gladys and Hill Blackett. She graduated, earning a degree in English with honors, from Wellesley College. While at Wellesley she met her future husband of 40 years, Robert Edmund Rogers, who was attending Harvard University. Pat and Bob, with their two young daughters, moved to the DC area in 1959, where they lived the rest of their lives. A life-long horsewoman, Pat began riding in Chicago as a child, foxhunting and competing at horse shows. She continued to ride through her college years training with Col. Frederick von Lombeck of Rochester, NY. After a brief hiatus while helping husband Bob establish his manufacturing company, Pat returned to riding when she and Bob moved to Virginia. With her enthusiasm, she encouraged their two daughters to ride as well, training with Jane Marshall Dillon of Junior Equitation School, Vienna, Virginia. Over the years, Pat was involved in breeding and racing thoroughbreds and raised several field hunters. She also owned show horses, including All Smiles and Lord Jim, shown in the Junior Hunter Division by daughter Hillary. Probably her best known show horse was True Blue, 7 time AHSA/USEF National Ladies Side Saddle Champion, ridden by daughter, Penny. Pat was a familiar figure ringside supporting her daughters. She earned the Parents’ award at the 2011 Warrenton Horse Show. Her true passion was foxhunting. Pat earned her colors with 4 packs: Long Meadow (IL), Fox River Valley (IL), Fairfax (VA) and Middleburg (VA). She served as Field Secretary for Fairfax for 18 seasons. A subscriber of the Middleburg Hunt from the early 1960’s, she was a member of their Board of Governors for more than 40 years, serving as the Board President for several terms. In addition, in the early 1970’s she made four foxhunting trips to Ireland, hunting with some of the best packs in the country. As a great supporter of the sport of foxhunting, in 2002 she traveled to London to participate in the March for Liberty and Livelihood to protest the ban against foxhunting in England. Besides riding, Pat was an avid tennis player. As a teenager, she learned to water ski in France and was one to the first people to water ski in the U.S. She enjoyed traveling and sailing with her family, taking them with her on several sailing adventures worldwide. Pat is survived by daughter Priscilla (Penny) Rogers Denegre and her husband, John (Middleburg, VA); granddaughter, Alden Denegre Moylan (Middleburg, VA); brother, Hill Blackett, Jr. (Steamboat Springs, CO). She was predeceased by her husband, Bob, in December 1992, and her daughter, Hillary Rogers Brooks in February 2012. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Church, Middleburg, VA, on Sunday, April 10, at 4 p.m. The Very Reverend Anne Hallmark will preside. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Emmanuel Church, P.O. Box 306, Middleburg, VA 20118.
