Irene was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Stanley and Stella Stempski. She served as a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II. She met Harold Hutton on the train, they had breakfast together outside the train station in Kansas City, Missouri. After they were married they lived in San Diego, California then Northern New York and ended up in Herkimer, New York. Irene worked as a bookkeeper for various businesses retiring from Howland's Department Store (formerly Munger's). She was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post 4915 in Herkimer. An avid bowler for many years, she also took pleasure in camping in the Adirondacks at Eighth Lake
