Son of Jane Stringer & John Burton, both of England. Brother of Mary née Burton Marshall, Ann née Burton Cookman, William & John Burton (known siblings). He immigrated to the US from Canada in the 1840's & married Sarah Phebe Russell about 1846 (no record found). The couple lived in Plato, IL where they had nine children: Mary, Mark, George, Julia, Walter Rodolpho, Charles, Martha, Adele & John.

The 1850 Plato census lists Richard & Phebe both erroneously born in S C (transcribed as South Carolina instead of Canada). (Note: Sarah Phebe was actually born in OH). The 1860 & 1870 census (both Plato) is fairly straightforward (1870 has Walter Rodolpho as "Doff").

The 1865 Rutland census (Plato fell into this area) shows Richard as head of a household of 8: 3 males born 1845-55 (Mark, George & Walter Rodolpho), 1 male born 1815-25 (Richard), 1 female born 1855-65 (Adelia), 2 females born 1845-55 (Mary & Julia) & 1 female born 1825-35 (Sarah). Both Charles & Martha having died young & son John not yet born.

The family moved in the 1870's to nearby Genoa, Dekalb Co., IL. The couple & 3 children still at home (Mary, Adelia & John) are listed there for the 1880 census. It's unclear where Richard died. After his death his wife went to live with daughter Adele Hawthorne in Elgin, IL.
