Melvin Burton Patterson (Burt) married Eva Webber in 1890, he worked for a while in the hardware business; later he farmed in Missouri, and mined in Sutter County, California. In the Fall of 1900, Burt, Eva and their five surviving sons moved to Columbia County, Oregon, where Evan was born in 1901. When Evan was three weeks old, Eva died leaving Burt with six sons (Chalmer, William, Robert, Vincent, Dorian and Evan), under 9-1/2 years of age.
