On July 4, 1883 John found himself in legal trouble when an argument with a man named John Saunders came to blows resulting in Saunders receiving a fatal head injury. John Heater was brought up on involuntary manslaughter charges but was ultimately acquitted. This story did dominate the local news as John spent some jail time pending bail and the outcome.
By the time of the 1900 census (age 39) John was now in Mount Hope, New York with his wife and 9 children. In the 1910 census (age 49) he and his family were now in Middletown, New York, and had grown to 12 children. He and his family continue to appear in Middletown censuses in 1915 (age 54), 1920 (age 59), 1925 (age 64), 1930 (age 69) and 1940 (age 78).
John was 88 years old at the time of his death.
