Dorset, a successful army captain, was appointed Colonial Surgeon and arrived in Wellington with Colonel Wakefield on the Tory in 1839. Prominent in colonial affairs, he owned several central city properties. Point Dorset, Seatoun, was named after him. This is one of 28 wooden grave markers still surviving.

Sacred to the memory of John Dorset, Surgeon, who died at Nelson, October 2 1856, aged 49 years. Also Henry Lorimer Dorset, who died March 27 1850, aged 8 months. Also William Dorset, who died April 2nd 1877, aged 75 years. Also Charlotte Matilda, Relict of the late Wm Dorset, died October 13th 1901, aged 79 years.
