Peggy White, 92, died on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, at the Berkshire Center, where she resided for the past 5 years. A Shillington resident since birth, she was the daughter of William and Violet M. White. With the exception of the five prior years, Peggy lived her entire life in the house where she was born, Peggy was always an exceptional individual. She graduated from Shillington High School at 15 years of age and was the valedictorian of her class. From there, she matriculated to Hood College in Maryland, where she majored in English and Latin. After graduating with high honors in 1945, she moved back to Berks County, where she taught for several years at Boyertown High School. Taking a year off, Peggy obtained a Masters degree in English at the University of Pennsylvania and spent a semester in Europe as part of an exchange program. Peggy then began her career as a teacher of English and Latin at Shillington (later Governor Mifflin Senior High School). Toward the end of her career, she served as
Publications Specialist for the school district before retiring in 1982. Following retirement, Peggy traveled extensively throughout the world.
Eastern Star was another of her passions. She was very active in the local and regional chapters serving in many capacities. She was Past Worthy Matron of The Order of Eastern Star of Reading, Pa., during 1957-58. Peggy was also past president of the Shillington Women's Club, past president of the Reading Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Hood College, Reading, Pa., local alumni. Grace Lutheran Church in Shillington was a second home for Peggy. As a member for over 50 years, she participated in all aspects of the church organization, from singing in the choir to being president of the church council for six years, to teaching Sunday School classes, to editing the monthly newsletter, and monitoring the church sanctuary to see that everything was ready for regular and special services. Peggy led a full life serving others as her talents allowed.
There are no immediate survivors. She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Barbara.
A funeral service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 30 Liberty Street, Shillington, Pa., on Monday, September 12, 2016, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Carl Filer officiating. A visitation will be held in the narthex of the church from 10-11 a.m. If desired, memorials in Peggy's memory can be made to Grace Lutheran Church in Shillington.
