Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late E. Russell and Helen Beatrice (Hill) Matz. She was a graduate of Hatfield High School and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science from West Chester Teacher’s College and two master’s degrees from Temple University.
Marian began teaching elementary school in Lansdale and then left to serve in the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps during WWII. She was employed as a reading specialist and district reading supervisor for the Central Bucks School District for many years. Always believing in the importance of giving back to the community, Marian filled her retirement with volunteer work. She tutored inmates working toward their GEDs through the VITA Adult Literacy Program. She trained hundreds of adult literacy volunteers for VITA and Indian Valley Opportunity Center. Well into her 90s, she tutored English as a Second Language to many refugees and immigrants from Vietnam, Kosovo, Russia, Burma, Liberia, and El Salvador. Last year she retired from tutoring ESL at West Broad Street Elementary School and from 22 years of teaching her weekly Sunday School class for adults with developmental disabilities.
Marian was also a lifelong active learner, from Elderhostel travel during her early retirement to regular attendance at lectures in her retirement community. She loved walking, playing games, crafts, and having friends and family around her.
She is survived by three children, Richard Detwiler and his wife Hong-Nhung of Souderton, Susan Detwiler and her husband Steven Timmons of White City, OR, and Jon Detwiler and his wife Susan of Baltimore, MD; six grandchildren: Elizabeth, Sarah, Peter, Samuel, Herman, and Felix; a great-granddaughter, Samaria; a sister, Betty Bloom of Lansdale; and a brother, Russell Matz and his wife Cass of Sellersville. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Foesig.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1000 W. Main Street, Lansdale. Family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private at the Whitemarsh Memorial Park in Prospectville.
