Mary Eleanor Moritz of Lake Waukomis, Missouri, passed away Sunday, December 8, 2002. Mary was born September 21, 1914, to Charles and Clara (Rust) West. She and her brother, David West, were raised in the Belton, Missouri, area. Mary graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1932.

On March 15, 1935, she married John Moritz. Mary helped John practice law in the Kansas City area and also helped him operate a cattle farm in Sedalia. Mary and John also raised champion bird dogs and won many ribbons in area field trials.

After John's death in 1978, Mary continued working for the Moritz & Kimball law firm, where she taught Carl about the practice of law. Mary's habit of answering the firm's telephone by repeating the firm's phone number in her "distinctive voice" was the best advertisement money could not buy. Mary finally retired in 1994 after a 61-year career as a legal secretary.

As a young lady, Mary was active in the Belton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She later joined the Park Hill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was a faithful member of the Faith Keepers Sunday School Class.

Mary was also active in a number of civic organizations and served as an officer in many of those groups. They included the Lake Waukomis Ladies Garden Club, The Business and Professional Women's Association, where she was chosen Woman of the Year, and the Belton Historical Society.

Mary was an avid genealogist, tracing her family lineage back many generations and she regularly corresponded with people all across the country, helping them trace their family heritage. Mary was also a longtime member of the TC Dance Club and participated in many dance exhibitions both at home as well as in Europe.

Mary leaves behind her adopted family, Adam, Allison, Paula and Carl Kimbrell; her sister-in-law, Lura West; nieces and nephews, and many faithful and dear friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 10, at Park Hill Christian Church. Burial in East Slope Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 1 p.m. Donations may be made to the church. (Arrangements: D.W. Newcomer's Sons White Chapel (816) 5610024)
