Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, He was not officially declared by the military as being dead until August 10, 1943, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Husband of Dorothy Marie Laporte who resided in Stafford Springs, Connecticut.

Leo served as a Storekeeper First Class, U.S.S. Vincennes (CA-44), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Tolland County, Connecticut prior to the war.

Leo was declared "Missing In Action" when the Vincennes, in what would be known as The Battle of Savo Island, was attacked by a large Japanese naval force and was bombarded with Japanese eight-inch armor-piercing shells, set afire, and eventually sank during the war.

The Vincennes had a total loss of 332 men dead and 167 wounded.

Leo was awarded the Purple Heart.

His brother, F1 Frank Paul LaPorte, was also "Killed In Action" during the war.
