Lance Cpl. Cody G. Watson of Anniston, Alabama graduated from Wellborn High School joined the Marine Corps in 2005. He was known for his upbeat spirit and was very polite, a typical kid enjoying life. He loved the outdoors, boating and swimming and riding his mountain bike and had spent thousands of hours hunting with his father. If it was something he wanted to do, he'd do it and worry about the consequences later. After high school, Watson had taken a maintenance job with the school system but did not view it as permanent. When he joined the Marines, he told his family that he wanted to do something that would make him proud of himself, that he wanted to join the best. He embraced the Marines, even managing to enjoy boot camp and earned two promotions in just nine months. In Iraq, he loved going out on missions and complained whenever he was got stuck operating a radio back in camp. He was a follower until he joined the Marines. Then he became a leader. He was 21.
