He was the son of Elijah and Mable (Nibarger) Dillard. He was raised and educated in Chillicothe.
Richard served in the United States Army from 1954-1956 at the Argonne National Laboratory Guided Missile Site in Cook County.
He married Nancy L. Brookman on February 7, 1999 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Richard was employed as an operator engineer for 30 years with Operating Engineers Local Union #150 in Countryside, IL. He was a lifetime member of the Grundy County Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #300 in Joliet.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his wife, Nancy; his daughters, Patty Suddick of Gardner, Cathy Balhut of Joliet, Donna (Ray) Hicks of Crest Hill and Sandy (Erik) Zacha of Morris; his sons, Richard L. (Annette) Dillard, Jr. of Romeoville, Steven (Kathy) Dillard of Morris, Robert (Trisha) Dillard of Crest Hill, Douglas (Janice) Dillard, Sr. of Joliet and David Dillard of Chicago. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, David and Richard Jr. in 1953, one grandson, Douglas Dillard, Jr., as well as a sister and a brother.
Burial: Monday, September 12, 2016 at 12:30 p.m., Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Morris Color Guard.
Arrangements have been entrusted with U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W. Washington Street, Morris, Illinois.
