Richard Leroy Kimbrel, 66, of rural Nokomis, died Sept 3, 2016 at Pana Community Hospital shortly after a heart attack. He was born April 19, 1950, in Greeley, Co., to Arthur and Muriel (Williams) Kimbrel.

He married Linda Karen (Dahler) White on May 21, 1977 in Nokomis. He is survived by a brother, Arthur Kimbrel of Colorado Springs, Co., sisters Judy (Scott) Thomas of Klamath Falls, Or., and Janet (Wayne) Harbor of Temecula, Ca.

Also surviving are daughters Nisa (Paul) Dykstra of Pana, and Teresa (Jeff) Smith of Taylorville; sons Brandon White of Nokomis, and Tracy (Bambi) Kimbrel of Pana; and grandchildren Bret White, Logan Warren, Dalton Perry, Abigail and Molly Smith, and Griffin and Lennon Kimbrel.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard was a member of the First Nation through his half-Cherokee mother, and grew up half wild on the Shoshone Cherokee Reservation near Wind River, Wyoming. He loved deep-sea fishing and worked as a lobsterman on the dory boats out of Newport Beach, Ca.; and as a Keno dealer in Reno, Nv. He had a deep appreciation for the natural world and the mountains and deserts of his youth, and was a contented near-hermit for 40 years out on the farm with his wife and family. He retired from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, Benld, Il., where he ran heavy equipment with the maintenance-of-way division. He was an avid collector of almost everything and spent many hours haunting auctions, flea markets, and garage sales.

A brief visitation and gathering of friends and family will be held Tuesday, September 13, from 6pm-7pm at Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis. Ashes will be scattered in Colorado at a later date.

Family & friends are invited to gather for a meal from 7:00 to 8:30 p.mn. at Steele Hall one block west of the funeral home.
