By the time of the 1851 census she is residing in the home of George Miller and Helen Mason, brother and sister of her parents. George and Helen Miller also raised Andrew Burns Miller, her brother, one of the twins. The second twin, John Mason Miller, was raised by Robert Boyle and Janet Miller, their aunt, who moved to Australia in 1865. The brothers, aged 15 years would never see each other again. Jane's father, Thomas, moved to Wabasha County, Minnesota in 1862. Jane was included in George Miller's will.
