Sally's father, John Coulbourn, was a boat builder and a coasting captain of schooners. He was lost at sea in 1821. Sally and her older sisters were under the age of four at the time he was drowned. Legend has it that their mother kept a candle burning in her window for him the remaining years of her life, fifty-one years. Sally's mother, Elizabeth Coulbourn, was buried at Pomfret alongside her brother, James Curtis Coulbourn.
