Mr. Norman graduated from St. Matthew High School and Northeast Louisiana State College (now ULM) receiving a B.A. degree in geology. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers upon his graduation in 1959. He served nine years in the military including a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was awarded the U.S. Army Bronze Star, U.S. Army Commendation Medal, South Vietnam Service Medal with three clusters, South Vietnam Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the U.S. Army Reserve Service Medal.

Upon leaving the military in 1968 with the rank of Major, he returned to Monroe to become a co-owner in Slagle-Johnson Lumber Inc., which is now Roofing Supply Group in West Monroe. In 1979, he became the first Chairman of the Northeast Louisiana Industrial Development Board of Ouachita Parish; served as President of the Louisiana Building Material Dealer Association; was a member of the Board of Directors, Monroe Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Development Division Vice President. He was a member of Bayou Desiard Country Club, Squire Creek Country Club and Ouachita Investment Inc.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie McEnany Norman and Ralph Thomas Norman, Sr.; and a grandson, Brandon Wayne Norman.

He was survived by his wife, Glynda Smith Norman; three children, Ralph T. "Chip" Norman and wife Deanna, Kimberly N. Felts and husband Mark, and Douglas W. Norman and wife Tracy; his sister, JoAnn Stratton and husband Ronald; four brothers, Richard Norman and wife Mary Ann, Pat Norman and wife Kay, all of West Monroe, Jack Norman and wife Yvonne of Shreveport, and David Norman and wife Linda of Melbourne, FL; and 5 grandchildren.
