DR. C.W. TOWNSEND, ORNITHOLOGIST, DIES

Boston Man Studied Birds Nearly 40 Years

Dr. Charles Wendell Townsend, physician, ornithologist and author, of this city and Ipswich, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Wendell Taber, 6 Rollins st.

He studied bird life for nearly 40 years and made this study a fascinating avocation. He studied other life, including mammals and insects, but birds were his special subject.

He was born in this city Nov 10, 1859, the son of Thomas Davis Townsend and Frances Barnard Smith Townsend. He prepared at Noble’s School in Boston and was graduated from Harvard University in the class of 1881, and from the Harvard Medical School in 1885.

Thereafter he was associated as house physician, district physician or physician to out-patients at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Lying-in Hospital, the Boston Children’s Hospital and the Seashore Home for Sick Children at Winthrop.

He married Gertrude Flint, daughter of Edward Flint, in Brookline, Sept. 28, 1891. She died in 1917. Two years later he married her sister, Sarah Gore of Boston. She died in 1924.

Started as Freshman

During his freshman year at Cambridge Dr. Townsend became a member of the Nuttall Ornithological Club and from that time on was intensely interested in the study of bird life. Between 1906 and 1920 he made numerous expeditions to sparsely settled districts in northeastern North America, one to Cape Breton, one to the Gaspe Peninsula and one to Labrador.

He spend the Winter of 1924-25 in the West, including New Mexico, Arizona, Washington and California, where he made the acquaintance of many birds new to him. The following Winter he explored the South. The Winter after that he started around the world, visiting, among other places, the Hawaiian Islands, Japan, China, Manila, Java and the Malay Peninsula, Ceylon, Palestine, Syria, Constantinople and Greece. The Winter of 1928 found him in South America. He also visited Italy, Holland and Ireland later.

Wrote Many Books

He published many books and documents on birds. He also published numerous monographs on ornithological subjects.

He was a fellow of the American Ornithologists’ Union, a member of British Ornithological Union, Nuttall Ornithological Club, Cooper Ornithological Club, Wilson Ornithological Club, Essex County Ornithological Club, Ottawa Field Naturalists’ Club, Northeastern Bird-Banding Association, Boston Society of Natural History, Massachusetts Audubon Society, Union Boat Club, Harvard Travelers’ Club, Authors’ Club (London) and Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Funeral services will be held in Mt Auburn Cemetery chapel, Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Surviving him are a son, Charles Townsend of Boston; three daughters, Mrs. C. Hale Sutherland of Bethlehem, Penn, Mrs. Wendell Taber of Boston, and Miss Gertrude Townsend of Boston; a brother, William S. Townsend of Boston, and three grandchildren.
