He was affectionately known as “Lucky” to his family and friends and as “Deac” to his church family. Johnny married his loving wife of 53 years, JoElla Samuel Reed, on July 9, 1963. Their union was blessed with three children: Zachary, Reginald and his baby, girl, Charmaine Reed.
For more than 30 years, he was employed with The City of Columbia as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 2005. He was a dedicated employee who was recognized as being the “best” equipment operator. Deacon Reed attended St. Mark Baptist Church on Chestnut Street and later moved his membership to Young’s Chapel Baptist Church where he has served as a deacon for over 30. “Deac” was dearly loved by all of his church family. He was a true solider for Christ and was especially known for his prayers. Johnny was also known for his delicious barbeque and deer meat that everyone loved.
Deacon Reed leaves to cherish beautiful memories: his loving wife, JoElla Samuel Reed; his three children: Zachary (Barbara) Reed, Reginald (Ronda) Reed and Charmaine (Thomas) Johnson, all of Columbia, South Carolina; three grandchildren: Erica Reed (Jamel) Spigner, Courtney Reed and Jamison Reed, all of Columbia, South Carolina and Clarissa Grier of Baltimore, Maryland; three great-grandchildren: Makhi and Marly Spigner and Kayden Reed, all of Columbia, South Carolina; two brothers: Jessie Reed of Orangeburg, South Carolina and Leroy Reed of Columbia, South Carolina; and four sisters: Olena Reed, Mattie Mae Reed, both of Columbia, South Carolina, Bobbi Mozek of Florence, South Carolina and Janie Nolen of Birmingham, Alabama; a loving mother-in-law: Mary Alice Moore Samuel of Columbia, South Carolina; eight sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives, all of whom will miss him dearly but rejoice in knowing that he is resting in the fullness of the Lord.
