John Mitchell Waters was born in the District of Columbia. He attended public schools in the District and at age 16 began work for the telephone company as a messenger. He worked in customer service, business management and public relations before his retirement in 1953. After retirement, he joined his wife’s travel agency, Waters Travel Service. His previous residence was the Westchester Apartments in northwest Washington. He was a past President of the Washington Lions Club and a member of the District of Columbia Society of the Oldest Inhabitants. He was a member and Vice President of the C&P Pioneers. He was a singer and was a soloist at the Washington Cathedral. He died at age 93 on Thursday, August 28, 1980 at the Wisconsin Avenue Nursing Home. Survivors included his wife Laura L. Waters, of the District and St. Petersburg, Florida; one son, John Mitchell Waters III, of Bethesda; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Services were held at DeVol Funeral Home at 2222 Wisconsin Avenue Northwest. Interment was at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. Memorial contributions were suggested to St. Alban’s Parish at Wisconsin and Massachusetts Avenues Northwest.
