Theodore (Ted) Arven Jr., 61, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2010. He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Arven Sr.

Ted was born on July 29, 1948, in Wilmington, N.C., to Ted and Wanda Arven. After graduating from Campbell University, he served as minister of music at First Baptist Church of Dunn, N.C., for several years before changing careers and moving into sales. Throughout his career, he worked for Shell Oil, Oscar Mayer, ConAgra, and most famously, Valleydale Foods. Ted began his career at Valleydale Foods in Bristol, Va., in 1980. Valleydale Foods and the "Three Pigs" were his passion, and he became well known and respected throughout the meat industry.
In addition to his many years of service at Valleydale, Ted was active throughout the Roanoke and Salem communities. In 2007 he served as President of the Salem/Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Kite Committee for the annual Kite Festival, and was proud to always see the "Three Pigs" flying overhead.
Family was everything to Ted. He cherished the big family get-togethers that the family always had in Clinton and his most favorite holiday was Christmas, having everyone open one present at a time, thus making the event an "all-nighter." However, the highlight of his life was when he became a grandfather and was called "Pop Pop" for the very first time. His favorite hobby was fishing off the piers at the beach and taking his boat to Myrtle Beach and riding the inter-coastal waterway. He also spent many summers on the water at Smith Mountain Lake.
Ted and Vicki were very fortunate throughout their marriage to have had opportunities to travel to many wonderful places and create wonderful, life-long memories. Their last trip was their dream vacation to Greece in the summer of 2008 to celebrate their "big" birthdays of turning 60 and 50 respectively. While on their many trips throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe, Ted and Vicki were very fortunate to have made many lasting friendships. To those wonderful people, we say "thanks for the memories."
Ted is survived by his loving wife and best friend of over 20 years, Vicki Moretz Arven; his son and daughter-in-Iaw, Ted Arven III and Roni (Nelson), of Roanoke; his daughter and son-in-Iaw, Valerie and Rob Dano, of Charlotte, N.C.; and his stepdaughter, who he always treated and raised as his own, Sarah Couch Dooley, of Colorado Springs, Colo. He is also survived by his mother, Wanda Arven (Norman) Matthews, of Clinton, N.C.; his sisters, Penny (Mike) Costin and Bebe (Don) Williams, both of Clinton, N.C.; and his six loving grandchildren whom he cherished, Kaelynn Dooley, Evan and Melanie Dano, and Cody, Brook, and Ashley Arven. He is also survived by his sister-in-Iaw, Sharon (Ron) Gilbert; his mother-in-Iaw, Mae Moretz, all of Lafayette, Ind.; in addition to several loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to family, several great and supportive friends are left to mourn his loss, Van and Teresa Johnson, Roger and Linda Counts, Kirk and Lynn Barrett, and Ray and Kathy Atkins.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Oakey's North Chapel by the Rev. Roger Counts of Calvary Baptist Church in Salem, Va., and Dr. Robert Phillips (first cousin of Ted) Pastor of First Baptist Church of Clemmons, N.C. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 4, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel.
Interment will be private. While flowers are appreciated, the family requests contributions be made in memory of Ted to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 189, Salem, Va. 24153.
The family would like to express gratitude to Dr. Vashist Nobbee, Dr. Karen Annis, Dr. Mark Currie, and Dr. Nelson Greene for their excellent care and support during Ted's illness. A special thanks also goes to the nurses at the Lewis Gale Infusion Center, Ruth Ann Dr. Currie's nurse, and the nurses in MICU and 6 West for all of their compassion and care. We will never be able to fully express our gratefulness for the many kind acts and prayers from all of our friends and caregivers.
