First marriage was to William J. Channel. The couple married on 02 February 1865 in Van Buren County, Iowa. That marriage ended in divorce. Sarah moved to Sacramento after her divorce, where she married Mr. Bilse.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Harry A. Nauman and Son Chapel for Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Bilse, who died of infirmities today in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hughes, at 1628 G. Street. Interment will be in the Sacramento Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Bilse was born in Ohio, but her parents took her to Iowa as a girl. Her parents were the late Rev. and Mrs. J.W. Wharton who lived in Sacramento many years and died within three weeks of each other.

Herman Bilse, her late husband, was a Sacramento boat builder and was active in music circles. The survivors, besides the daughter, are her grandchildren, William J. McConnell;, Thomas B. Channel, Dewey G. and Lewey Channel of Sacramento. She was the aunt of Percy Wharton of Sacramento and the sister of the late F.F. and J.S. Wharton.
