Jo Ann Ruttiger Curtis passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Friday, September 2, 2016, at the Seasons Personal Care Home in Hitchcock.

She was born April 2, 1931, to Phil and Gladys Ruttiger.

She is survived by her children: Tom (Cathy) Curtis of Ontario, Canada; Phyllis (Mike) McKenzie of Santa Fe; Rob (Lisa) Curtis of Galveston; Chris (Katy) Curtis of Texas City; and Carol Ann Thomas of Santa Fe; her loving grandchildren: Sammy (Melissa) Parks, Laura (Garrick) Addison, Sara (David) Spence, Marion McKenzie, Maggie (Anthony) Cann, Michael and Phillip Curtis; and 9 great grandchildren she loved so much. Also surviving is her nephew, Carl (Cathy) Letinich and niece, Cindy (John) Garza.

Jo Ann was a BOI, living most of her life on the island. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Ursuline Academy. At the age of forty, after raising her four children, she went back to school receiving a degree in x-ray technology. She worked many years as an x-ray tech at UTMB. Jo Ann was a history buff. After retirement, Jo Ann made multiple trips to Europe to explore the history and culture she enjoyed learning about. Jo Ann also loved family gatherings so she could serve up her special gumbo from an old family recipe.

Jo Ann was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and surrogate mother to many of her children’s friends. Her home was always open and the place where all the kids congregated. She will be missed and remembered for all she has done in her life for others. Jo Ann’s family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm, Friday, September 9, at Malloy & Son Funeral Home. A rosary will begin at 6:30 pm.

Memorial Mass will be 10:00 am, Saturday, September 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Galveston. Internment for Jo Ann will be held at a later date.

The family would like to express special thanks to Sherry Boudreaux, Tamela Benion and the owners and staff of Seasons Personal Care Home for all their loving care over the last 10 years
