Edith Irene Hodges Owens Riley

Edith Irene Owens Riley, 98, passed away Sept. 5, 2016 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Graveside service 3:00 pm Fri., Sept. 9, 2016 at De Soto Cemetery, De Soto, KS. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to De Soto United Methodist. Arrangements: Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, KS (913) 856-7111.

Edith was born Sept. 23, 1917 in Cross Roads, MO to Arthur W. and Della Mae (Sanders) Hodges. She grew up in Ava, MO where she graduated from Ava High School. Edith earned her LPN from the Univ. of Kansas Medical Ctr. where she was also employed. She later worked for the Johnson County Dept. of Health retiring in the 1970’s. Edith married Rex S. Owens and they moved to De Soto in 1953 for work at the Sunflower Plant. After his death she married John Riley. She was an active member of De Soto United Methodist as a choir member, treasurer, Sunday School teacher and MYF sponsor. Edith enjoyed doing hand work “drawn work.” She and her husband Rex traveled with the Harmonicats, a Blue Grass group, throughout the area.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Rex in 1988 and John in 2009; sisters, Thelma and Effie and an infant brother. Edith is survived by children: Mary E. Owens Lafferty, Lawrence, KS, Ann M. Owens Parey, Capitan, New Mexico, John and wife Mary Riley, Jr., Shawnee, KS and Saundra Riley Morgan, Shawnee, KS; sister, Lois and husband Cecil Robertson, Heber Springs, AR; five grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
