When Richard Elkins was born, Brunswick Co. Pittsylvania was not formed until 1766.

Right after it was formed, Richard had the distinction of being recorded on the tax list for Pittsylvania, along with his brothers Ralph, Richard, Nathaniel, Jesse, and James. At the time, Richard was about 40 years old.

The following year, he appeared on the Botetourt records. I doubt he moved. Botetourt was practically on top of the Brunswick. He didn't move in the 1779 tax record for Henry County either. Henry was formed from Pittsylvania. Later, he was recorded living in Washington County and then Tazewell, where he died. He likely never traveled more than 30 miles from where he was actually born.

Richard was the great grandson of Ralph Elkins and Francis Ashton. The Elkins family progenitor, Ralph arrived from England in the 1650's and settled in Westmoreland, VA. The second generation, Richard and his wife, Elizabeth Bryant, a descendant of Rappahannock Chief Wahangnoche, also known as "Whipsewasin" continued to live in the tidewater area, living a life of gentry. A lifestyle, that Ralph, their son, was accustomed too. However, by the 1730's-1740's the land was playing out. Fertile land laid to the west; and the family (including brother's families) did what they had to do…. Relocate. They ended up to the wilderness of Prince George…..Later it was known as Pittsylvania where our Richard was born.

Sometime between 1761-63, Richard & his brother Ralph, joined the Dan River Baptist Church. The prevailing religion in this county was the Church of England. Failure to attend that church resulted in fines, up to 50 lbs. of tobacco a month. Preaching another religion even after 1776, was heresy. Preachers were imprisoned and often publically whipped and humiliated until they acknowledged their "fault". Richard was an assistant pastor. There was an arrest warrant out for him. However, it, through the grace of God, was never served.

Richard married Elizabeth Bryant (some say Buchanan) or Martha "Mary" Gallop. Both or neither. It's unclear at this time.
